Ed. Dept. Relaxes Its Rules on Preferred-Lender Lists

Last year, with their attention focused on the student-loan scandal, Congress and the Bush administration imposed new restrictions on the ability of colleges to recommend loan companies to their students.

Now, with its attention on the financial problems facing the student-loan industry rather than on the scandal, which highlighted a series of conflicts of interest in the relationships between colleges and the loan companies serving their students, the Bush administration may be easing
