Eastern Michigan U. President Takes Steps to Shore Up Campus Security

Two weeks after a withering report on Eastern Michigan University’s campus-safety operations in general, and its faltering and deceptive response to a student’s murder in particular, the institution’s president announced a series of steps on Friday to improve security on the campus. According to today’s Ann Arbor News, the announcement was made in an e-mail message from John A. Fallon III, the president, who this week dodged a call for his dismissal from 20 professors.

The steps include issuing biweekly reports on campus crime, clarifying the lines of authority and responsibility for overseeing campus security, and requiring campus police officers to get training on compliance with the Clery Act, a federal campus-crime law. The training will be conducted by Security on Campus, a watchdog group that has assailed Eastern Michigan’s handling of the murder case as a likely violation of the law. (The U.S. Education Department is expected to issue findings soon about the matter.)

In his message, President Fallon also said he planned to create a formal policy for “crisis communications.” —Andrew Mytelka
