East Carolina U. Investigates Police Conduct After Football Game

Officials at East Carolina University are investigating allegations that police officers used excessive force against fans who rushed onto the field after a football game over the weekend, according to The Daily Reflector, a newspaper in Greenville, N.C., where the university is located.

Videos of the aftermath of the game, in which East Carolina defeated West Virginia University, have appeared on YouTube and elsewhere online. In one, an officer whose agency is not readily identifiable restrains a fan and throws him to the ground.

Scott Shelton, East Carolina’s chief of police, called the video accounts “sickening.”

“Any undue or excessive use of force will not be tolerated,” he said at a news conference, according to USA Today. Five other police agencies help with security during football games, he said, and poor communication may have contributed to the incidents.

In the future, Mr. Shelton said, “we will look at who we have trained with, who we know the best, who we’re most comfortable with.” —Sara Lipka
