Early-Decision Programs Help Many Colleges, But Only a Few High-School Students

When I was an assistant dean of admission at Amherst College, I was conflicted about the early-decision option: I felt that it often encouraged students to make decisions too early, and that we often accepted students for our purposes, not theirs ("New Attacks on Early Decision," January 11).
