The Environmental Protection Agency plans to create a center to help colleges and universities comply with federal environmental laws and regulations, the EPA announced on Wednesday. The center, like ones the EPA has created for other sectors of the American economy, is part of an agreement between the federal agency and the National Association of College and University Business Officers.
Colleges have long complained that federal hazardous-waste laws, in particular, are an awkward fit for academe, which produces only a small fraction of the nation’s waste and is unlike the industries that generate large volumes of waste. The complaints have accompanied a crackdown in recent years by the EPA on colleges that are not in compliance with federal environmental policies (The Chronicle, June 5).
