A day after Kentucky’s governor, Ernie Fletcher, said he would not veto an $11-million grant for a pharmacy school at the University of the Cumberlands, a gay-rights group has sued to block the grant, and Governor Fletcher has responded by asking a judge to decide whether Kentucky’s Constitution bars such state aid for religious colleges, The Courier-Journal, a Louisville newspaper, reported today.
The university, a Baptist institution, has drawn headlines in the last month over its expulsion of a gay student, a move that put it in the cross hairs of gay-rights activists (The Chronicle, April 8, April 20, and April 25).
The legal action by Mr. Fletcher, a Republican, also concerns state funds for Campbellsville University, a Baptist institution that would receive $318,000 for a technology center. The governor said he would not release the money until the judge rules.
