Dude, What Did the TA Just Say?

I fully sympathize with North Dakota State Rep. Bette Grande's worries about the English that is spoken by foreign-born teaching assistants ("Teach Impediment," The Chronicle, April 8).

Having spent some 30 years in the classroom teaching American students, I, like, totally, like, understand why some freshman or sophomore would, like, freak out at some totally incomprehensible dude who didn't, like, speak English good. Myself, I think Ms. Grande's legislative
