Drug Busts and Financial Aid
To the Editor:
You reported that arrests for drug offenses on college campuses increased by 2.6 percent from 2002 to 2003 ("For the 12th Straight Year, Arrests for Alcohol Rise on College Campuses," The Chronicle, June 24). Meanwhile, government statistics about drug use among young people indicate a steady decline. ... So why is there an increase of arrests on college campuses? The answer is simple: increased enforcement.
