The proportion of American teenagers who use illegal drugs or who drink alcohol illicitly continued a decade-long decline this year, according to the results of a survey of 50,000 secondary-school students that was released this morning. The survey, known as Monitoring the Future, was conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor with a grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse. While use of illegal drugs like marijuana and crack cocaine dropped slightly, the survey found, abuse of prescription drugs, such as OxyContin and Vicodin, remained high.
