Dramaturgs Play a Useful Role
To the Editor:
The wholesale bashing of dramaturgs is certainly not news to theater professionals, but whose rescue, exactly, is Terry McCabe riding to ("A Good Director Doesn't Need a Dramaturg," The Review, June 29)? If he's suggesting the American theater is in such good shape that it can dispense with nettlesome foreign ideas and let its directors bluster on in stalwart Anglo-Saxon sovereignty, the evidence certainly suggests otherwise.
