Don't Commercialize College Sports

To the Editor:

I was dismayed to read Robert Atwell's "The Only Way to Reform College Sports Is to Embrace Commercialization" (The Review, July 13). Dr. Atwell has had a distinguished career as a leader in higher education, and I greatly respect his contributions. ... But his willingness to give in to the commercial interests of big-time athletics is disheartening.

There are values endemic to the educational mission that must be preserved for the integrity of higher education.
