Do Sociologists Care Too Little About Theory, and Too Much About Their Image?

Sociology is and can be scientific. There is quite a bit of work similar to the kind that Theodore D. Kemper describes ("Toward Sociology as a Science, Maybe," Opinion, August 11), most notably in the developing area of group processes, but (less consistently) in other areas as well.
