Disgraced Scientist Transplants His Stem-Cell Research From South Korea to Thailand

Woo Suk Hwang, the infamous former star of South Korea’s stem-cell program, has restarted his cloning research in Thailand in recent months, according to news reports. Dr. Hwang was fired last year by Seoul National University after it was revealed that his team had faked its much-heralded claim of using cloning techniques to create colonies of human embryonic stem cells.

Two months ago, the scientist moved his operations to Thailand, where he is conducting cloning research using animal eggs and human cells, according to Agence France-Presse and the Associated Press. An article in Nature today reports that the Thai government was not aware of Dr. Hwang’s activities. —Richard Monastersky
