Disabled Students Remain Eligible for Federally Subsidized Housing

Washington — Many college students are ineligible for federally subsidized housing, but those who have disabilities may qualify for such assistance, according to regulations published in today’s Federal Register.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development issued the rules to match the exemption for disabled students already included in federal law.

Congress created that exemption in 2006, after the department closed a loophole allowing students on full scholarships to benefit from subsidized housing, in a program known as Section 8 for the part of the federal law that established it. But closing the loophole, lawmakers determined, also denied subsidies to disabled students.

The regulations issued today say that, along with disabled students, those who are over 23, are married, have children, or are veterans may be eligible for federally subsidized housing. —Sara Lipka
