'Digital Storytelling: The Narrative Power of Visual Effects in Film'
As a lesson in ancient history, the new movie 300 is problematic. Its biases and inaccuracies are already fodder for scholars. As a spectacle, however, things are different. Spartans and Persians meet in a Battle of Thermopylae full of stunning tableaux. Blending live actors and digital creations, 300's computer-generated imagery brings visual pleasure to anyone open to a surfeit of violence and swagger. But what is the impact of so much CGI? Is storytelling sacrificed?
