Desperately Seeking Baby Sitters

David D. Perlmutter's "Doctoral Student, Scholar, Baby Sitter?" (Careers, November 12) closes with some guidelines to prevent graduate students who serve as baby sitters for their professors from feeling exploited. The author admonishes professors not to "bully" or "blackmail" students into baby-sitting.

It seems to me, however, that in order to avoid exploitation you must simply never ask your graduate students to do any kind of service for you that they could
