Desegregation Lawsuit Nears End in Tenn.
Plaintiffs in Tennessee's 38-year-old college-desegregation lawsuit joined state and higher-education officials last week to announce that they were asking a federal judge to formally end the case.
Representatives for all parties to the lawsuit, which originated in 1968, said they believed the state had fulfilled its court-ordered obligations to further desegregate its public institutions and to improve college opportunities for black students.
