Deputy Secretary of Education Resigns

William D. Hansen has announced that he is stepping down from the No. 2 position at the U.S. Education Department.

Mr. Hansen, who has been the department's deputy secretary since March 2001, wrote in a letter to President Bush this month that he would be leaving the agency "to focus my energy on my family" and to pursue a job in the private sector. His resignation will be effective July 4.
