Democrats Introduce Higher-Education Bill
Democrats in the House of Representatives introduced legislation last month that would raise the maximum Pell Grant award to $7,000 over a three-year period and double federal financing for programs that aid certain institutions with large minority enrollments.
The "21st Century Higher-Education Initiative," proposed by Rep. George Miller of California and cosponsored by 93 other Democrats, would raise the maximum Pell Grant by more than 50 percent in the 2002 fiscal year, to $6,000
