Defiance and Death in Beijing
After suppression of protesters, Chinese officials demand that student leaders turn themselves in or face punishment
Chinese authorities set up military checkpoints around Beijing's university district late last week, backing up earlier demands that leaders of the pro-democracy student movement in Beijing end their boycott of classes and turn themselves in -- or face severe punishment.
As truckloads of soldiers rolled past Beijing University, loudspeakers announced a nighttime curfew in the district. The actions seemed to signal the start of a renewed crackdown on student activists.
