Debate Grows as Bush Nears Decision About Stem-Cell Studies

As President Bush came closer last week to deciding whether the federal government should finance human stem-cell research, university scientists in Virginia announced what may be the first-ever creation of human embryos solely for the purpose of providing the cells.

Also last week, a corporation in Massachusetts confirmed that it is attempting to create cloned human embryos as a source of stem cells.

The news added fuel to the debate about the ethics of stem-cell research
