Death of the Desktop
It's hard to pinpoint the moment when desktop computing died at the University of Virginia: Did it happen the day the university started building its expansive wireless network? Or was it a slow death caused by the declining cost of a laptop? Whatever the case, there can be little doubt that the desktop, once a dorm-room staple, is fast turning into a curio.
Of the more than 3,000 first-year students who brought computers to Virginia last fall, only 90 showed up with desktop computers.
