Gunmen have killed 182 professors and other academics in Iraq since a U.S.-led coalition invaded the country, three years ago this month, according to a tally released today by the Association of University Lecturers in Iraq and reported by the Reuters news agency.
The number is substantially higher than that reported last summer in a United Nations-financed study of the state of Iraq’s universities. That report said 50 professors had been killed (The Chronicle, August 31, 2005). Many more have fled the country.
