Death Toll Passes 50 for Iraqi Academics
Three professors at Baghdad's Al-Mustansiriya University were killed last month by unidentified gunmen. The killings are the latest in a string of violent attacks on Iraqi academics, who have become favorite targets of insurgent groups.
More than 50 Iraqi university professors have been killed in the nearly two and a half years since the American-led invasion of Iraq, according to a recent United Nations-financed report on the state of Iraq's universities.
