Death Sentence Lifted for Iranian Scholar

Iran's Supreme Court has revoked the death sentence imposed in November against the chairman of the history department at Tarbiat Modarres University, in Tehran.

Hashem Aghajari was convicted of apostasy by a lower court for a lecture he gave last summer at Bu-Ali Sina University, in the western city of Hamadan, in which he challenged the authority of Iranian clerics to interpret religion and called for a reformation in Islam.
