Daschle Is Tapped to Lead Health and Human Services

Thomas A. Daschle, the former Senate majority leader, has been picked as the next secretary of health and human services.

The job would give Mr. Daschle, a close adviser to President-elect Barack Obama, oversight of a $700-billion budget that finances the National Institutes of Health and other agencies. He is expected to play a key role in Mr. Obama's efforts to expand health-care coverage.

It is unclear what Mr. Daschle's appointment would mean for science policy and research
