Dartmouth President Steers Wounded Veterans to College Degrees

The American Council on Education and James Wright, president of Dartmouth College, have created a pilot program that helps severely wounded veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts learn about enrolling in college, according to officials at the council. Today’s New York Times reported that about 100 veterans had sought assistance from educational counselors hired under the program.

Mr. Wright’s inspiration for the program was the first of his nine visits with wounded veterans at military hospitals in the Washington area. A former U.S. Marine himself, Mr. Wright told The Chronicle in 2006 that many of the wounded soldiers and Marines he saw were the age of typical Dartmouth students. “We’ve got to find a way to welcome them back,” he said. —Paul Fain
