Dartmouth Gets Four Drafts of O'Neill Play
The Fountain, a play written in 1921 by Eugene O'Neill, was a flop. But Dartmouth College considers a prize the recent gift of four sequential drafts of the play.
The typescript drafts, given in memory of Bella C. Landauer by her grandchildren (including Judith Landauer McLaughlin, the wife of David T. McLaughlin, Dartmouth's president from 1981 to 1987), offer scholars valuable insights into O'Neill's revision process, according to Philip N. Cronenwett, special-collections
