Daniel E. Koshland Jr., an expert on enzymes at the University of California at Berkeley and former editor of the journal Science, died on Monday after a stroke. He was 87.
Mr. Koshland, who won many of science’s top research awards, was perhaps best known among scientists as the editor of Science, from 1985 to 1995. He also played important administrative roles at Berkeley, including, in the 1980s, reorganizing 11 small biology departments at Berkeley into three large ones.
For his research on how enzymes function and on how cells respond to chemical cues in the environment, he was named a member of the National Academy of Sciences and received a National Medal of Science, the Lasker Award, and the Welch Award in Chemistry, among other distinctions. Berkeley has posted a full obituary on its Web site. —Lila Guterman
