DNA Study Reveals Mediocre Grape in Fine Wines' Ancestry
Scientists have discovered that 16 varieties of grapes, responsible for some of France's finest wines, are the descendants of a grape considered so mediocre that it is no longer planted in France.
Using DNA-based techniques, the researchers found that the 16 varieties -- which include chardonnay, aligote, and gamay noir -- are the direct offspring of the classic pinot variety. But they also discovered that the other half of the parental pair is the obscure
