Cultural Endowments Would Get Flat Budgets Under Senate Bill

The Senate Appropriations Committee approved a bill today that would provide $124-million for the National Endowment for the Arts and $141-million for the National Endowment for the Humanities in the 2007 fiscal year, the same as in the current fiscal year. A version of the bill passed by the House of Representatives in May would provide an additional $5-million for each of the agencies (The Chronicle, May 18).

In other action, the committee approved a bill that would provide $50-million for the Office of University Programs in the Department of Homeland Security. The office is receiving $63-million in the current fiscal year, which ends on September 30. The House’s bill would provide $51.97-million for the office, the same as President Bush’s budget request.
