Supporters of the National Endowments for the Arts and for the Humanities won a small victory today, when the U.S. House of Representatives agreed to add $5-million to each agency’s budget for the 2007 fiscal year.
Under a spending bill expected to be approved tonight, the humanities endowment would receive $146-million and the arts endowment would receive $129-million. The original House bill would have provided no increase in funds for the two agencies over the current fiscal year, which ends on September 30 (The Chronicle, May 12). President Bush also did not request a spending increase (The Chronicle, February 7).
