Court Extends and Expands Restrictions on Animal-Research Protesters at UCLA

The University of California at Los Angeles has obtained a court order that extends and expands a previous one that bars opponents of laboratory-animal research from harassing the scientists.

The judge’s order, issued on Tuesday, extends a temporary injunction issued in February until February 2009, when a trial will be held on the university’s request for a permanent injunction. The court also expanded this week the order’s scope to include people acting in concert with five individuals and three groups covered by the previous order.

A recent article in The Chronicle reported that the harassment had caused academic researchers to clam up about their work but not to abandon it. —Jeffrey Brainard
