The article "A New Momentum in Asian-American Studies" (April 2) quite correctly notes the significant growth of Asian-American studies throughout the country.

Peter Monaghan's statement that "Asian-American studies was born out of student protests in the late 1960s" requires some amplification, however, since a decade before, in 1957, Stanford M. Lyman, currently the Robert J. Morrow
