Washington — Cornell University’s Weill Medical College has agreed to pay $2.6-million to settle a charge of financial fraud in its pursuit of federal research money.
The settlement stems from a complaint by a whistle-blower at Weill Medical College who said that a principal research investigator seeking money from the National Institutes of Health and the Pentagon had failed to disclose the full extent of her other active research projects. Such omissions leave the government unable to fully assess the ability of the applicant to perform the job, federal prosecutors said.
Weill Medical College agreed to pay the government $2,606,751 to settle the case, without admitting any liability or wrongdoing, according to a report by The North Country Gazette, of Chestertown, N.Y.
Weill said in a written statement that the legal dispute concerned only funding decisions and did not involve any accusation of academic misconduct. —Paul Basken
