Consolidating Students' Loans

A disservice is provided to The Chronicle's readers in Stephen Burd's "Facing Competition, Lenders Attack Loan-Consolidation Program" (July 19).
The article flips the current debate on its head, suggesting that somehow student-loan lenders have initiated a campaign "against the consolidation program." The opposite is true: Student-loan lenders responded to an aggressive, well-funded legislative campaign to change the loan-consolidation program. But for this
