'Conservative Campaign' Against Academic Freedom

To the Editor:

In "Tenure Dispute at DePaul Ends With a Settlement and a Resignation" (The Chronicle, September 14), regarding the latest chapter in the Norman G. Finkelstein and Mehrene E. Larudee tenure debacle, a student is quoted as saying, "This is an issue bigger than Professor Finkelstein; it's about academic freedom."

As members of the faculty at the University of Illinois at Chicago, we couldn't be in greater agreement. The damage done to academic freedom will have
