Connecticut lawmakers have passed legislation fixing an unintentional provision in the state’s ethics law that has cost the University of Connecticut Foundation $7-million in corporate donations, the Associated Press reported. The law prevents government agencies, including public colleges, from accepting gifts from corporations with which they have contracts or from companies that seek to do business with them. But state colleges have complained that the provision prevents them from accepting private donations from companies as well.
The Senate voted unanimously on Wednesday to amend the provision to allow state agencies to receive gifts from contractors. The House has already passed the bill, which will now go to Gov. M. Jodi Rell to sign.
