Congressional Agreement Would Uphold 2 Controversial Patriot-Act Provisions
Library and civil-liberties groups voiced disappointment last week over a tentative agreement between the Senate and House of Representatives on renewing two controversial provisions of the USA Patriot Act that are set to expire this year. Critics say the compromise does little to protect Americans' privacy and free-speech rights and, in some cases, erodes those rights.
The two provisions are Section 215, known as the library provision, and Section 505, which concerns national-security
