Congress Votes Increase for NIH and Pell Grants

Lawmakers from the House of Representatives and the Senate agreed late last month to provide a $2.7-billion increase for the National Institutes of Health for the 2001 fiscal year, delighting college and research lobbyists. Student-aid advocates also applauded an agreement between the two chambers to raise the maximum award for Pell Grants by $350.

While the Senate passed a bill in June offering a $2.7-billion rise in spending for the N.I.H., the House voted
