Congress Unlikely to Ease Limits on Aid for Distance Programs

Congress will not ease financial-aid restrictions this session on institutions that enroll more than half of their students through distance education, a key senator said last month. The proposed rule changes will have to wait until next year at the earliest, when Congress debates reauthorization of the Higher Education Act.

At issue is a law denying federal financial aid to students who attend colleges that enroll more than 50 percent of their students at a distance.
