Congress Opposes Bush on Science Plan

Members of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee have joined ranks with their colleagues in the House of Representatives in approving a spending increase for the Office of Science in the U.S. Department of Energy next year, instead of a cut proposed by President Bush.

The increase, contained in a bill approved in June, would provide $3.70-billion for the office, a leading source of support for physics. That is an increase of 2.8 percent, or $102-million, over this year's level,
