Congress Mulls Consolidation of Tuition Tax Credits

The overlapping tax breaks for families of students who attend college are so complex that close to one in five tax filers who are eligible for the benefits fail to claim them, and more than one-quarter fail to file for the maximum amount they could receive.
That was the message delivered to Congress on Thursday by representatives of the Government Accountability Office, who testified at a hearing of a House of Representatives panel about simplifying tax credits for college
