Congress Eases Copyright Restrictions on Distance Education

President Bush is expected to sign a bill that would open the door for professors to use more copyrighted works in online courses without having to seek permission.

The bill, HR 2215, which authorizes spending for the Department of Justice, was approved by the Senate this month, shortly after the House of Representatives passed the legislation.

The bill includes a provision that would ease copyright law for online education by amending the Copyright Act of 1976. The provision
