Congress Considers Tax Breaks to Encourage Medical-Research Donations
AT ISSUE: Tax breaks for donations to support medical research.
GIST: The federal government has been increasing spending on biomedical research, but lawmakers are looking for other ways to encourage its expansion. Legislation introduced in both the House of Representatives and the Senate in June seeks to increase donations for medical research by changing federal income-tax laws. A person may now deduct up to 50 percent of his or her income for a given year as a charitable donation.
