Conflict-of-Interest Accusation Leads U. of Illinois Official to Resign

A University of Illinois official who drew criticism this summer for negotiating a partnership with a military contractor while he worked for it on the side has resigned, the Chicago Tribune reported today. Tom Dempsey, director of the university’s police-training program, was accused of a conflict of interest in arranging the deal with the contractor, Blackwater U.S.A., but he has maintained that his outside work for the company had received official approval. Still, documents disclosed last month showed that he had told his subordinates to keep quiet about his work for Blackwater. The university canceled the partnership last month, and Mr. Dempsey’s resignation was effective last Friday. —Andrew Mytelka
