Computer-virus writers are nothing if not opportunistic, so it’s not surprising that the newest piece of bogus software floating around the Web piggybacks off of the Virginia Tech shootings. But it’s a bit disconcerting that someone managed to produce a thematically relevant virus so quickly.

The new virus is embedded in an e-mail message that directs readers to a Brazilian Web site claiming to have camera-phone images of the attack. Anyone who tries visiting that site will instead end up downloading a Trojan-horse program that attempts to steal user names and passwords, according to VNUNet. —Brock Read
