Miami Dade College, the nation’s largest community college, has received a gift of nearly $11-million to help ease the nursing shortage in South Florida.
The gift, donated by the Mitchell Wolfson Sr. Foundation, will be used for nursing-student scholarships as well as faculty salaries, technology for the nursing program, and assistance to students taking the nursing licensure examination, the college announced in a news release.
The donation is one of the largest ever made to Miami Dade, and it’s a significant gift for any community college. Community colleges, which haven’t been in the fund-raising business as long as four-year institutions have, lag behind both public and private colleges in the amount of private money they raise.
The college estimates the donation will produce close to 600 nurses for the Miami area in the next four years. —Kathryn Masterson
