Community-College Chief Put on Leave Amid Scandal on Alabama Campus

The beleaguered president of Shelton State Community College was put on paid leave on Friday, amid a widening scandal on his campus, in Tuscaloosa, Ala., according to today’s Birmingham News. The president, Richard Rogers, has already drawn scrutiny for the $560,000 house that the college’s foundation built for him, and for his alleged role in a scheme to funnel state grants through the campus’s Alabama Fire College for the use of Mr. Rogers as well as a state lawmaker. Several other people at the Fire College have been charged with fraud and theft of state property in connection with the case.

Replacing Mr. Rogers at Shelton State, on an interim basis, will be Joanne Jordan, a former community-college president who has been criticized for her acceptance of sweet deals from an architect and painters who also did business with her college.
