Commercial Pressures and the Public Good

To the Editor:

We have read the report on the external review of the collaborative research agreement between Novartis and the University of California at Berkeley ("Reviewers Give Thumbs Down to Corporate Deal at Berkeley," The Chronicle, August 6). We were pleased to receive assurance from the reviewers that the agreement had minimal direct impacts on the university.

But that conclusion was reached without asking what would have happened if the deal had not been brought to
